Signalman Alfred Said was a Maltese soldier of the British Army who died during the Second World War.
He was born in Malta, the son of John and Teresa Said (née Fenech).
Aged 23, Said died on 6 March 1945, reportedly from malaria, whilst a prisoner of war at Paginatan, Borneo.[1] His unit, 77 (Welsh) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery had been captured after Japan's invasion of the island of Java in 1942. He had endured the first Sandakan "death march", which had taken place in early January 1945.[1]
He has no known grave and is commemorated by the Singapore Memorial.
