Numerous Americans served in the British Armed Forces during the two world wars. Some had to relinquish their citizenship in order to do so. The majority served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force, which was facilitated during the United States' period of neutrality in WWII by the Clayton Knight Committee. Three "Eagle" Squadrons of American RAF volunteers were formed between 1940 and 1941.
