Able Seaman Jacob Eli Steinberg was an English sailor of the Royal Navy who died during the Second World War.
He was born in 1907, in Bristol, the son of Russian-born parents Joseph, a tailor by profession, and Annie Steinberg.
Steinberg died on 15 September 1941, when the German U-boat U-94 torpedoed and sunk the steam merchant SS Empire Eland, with the loss of her 37 crew . He had been assigned from the shore base HMS President III as a DEMS gunner.
He has no known grave and is commemorated by the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
