Private John Richard Bestonso was an English soldier of the British Army who died during the First World War.
He was born on 28 January 1896, in St. Giles, the eldest son of Italian-born wood carver Giacinto and Mary Helen Bestonso (née Lewis), of London. At the time of the 1911 census, Bestonso, who was educated at St Mary's School, had followed into his father's trade and was living with his family at 81 Berry Street, Church Road.
Bestonso volunteered in November 1914, joining the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). He went to Egypt in January 1915, serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, against the Ottoman Empire, with the 2/10th Middlesex. He died on 19 April 1917, in the Second Battle of Gaza.
He is buried in Gaza War Cemetery.
