Lieutenant Michele Achille Francesco Amoroso was an English officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.
He was born in 1892, in Birkenhead, the son of Michele, an Italian-born ship broker originally of Palermo, and Margaret Emma Amoroso (née Briscoe), of Bromborough. Amoroso attended Stonyhurst College, and belonged to the amateur Liverpool Ramblers football club. He enlisted on 4 August 1914, in the Liverpool Scottish battalion of the King's Regiment, and later obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery.[1]
Amoroso went to the Western Front in September 1915, and fought in the Battle of Loos. He died on 3 July 1916, killed by a sniper during the Somme Offensive. According to his commanding officer, Amoroso had decided to man a Lewis machine gun to deal with snipers harassing a party of forward observation officers (FOOS) and attacking infantry.[1] He belonged to the 96th Brigade, RFA.
He is buried in Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt.
