Mortimer Schiff

Captain Mortimer Edward Harold Schiff was an English officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.

He was born in 1888, in Kensington, the only son of German-born parents Herman, a stockbroker's agent, and Clotilde Schiff. His education took him to Harrow and Jesus College, Cambridge, after which he became articled to Messrs Stephenson, Harwood & Co. He qualified as a full solicitor in 1913.[1]

Schiff enlisted after the outbreak of war, in 1914, entering the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps before obtaining a commission in the Suffolk Regiment. His initial employment was in England, as a musketry officer at Hythe, and he would not be dispatched to the Western Front until January 1917. On 25 September, while in command of a company of the 12th Suffolks, Schiff was severely wounded in the execution of a raid on German trenches at Gouzeaucourt. He was reported missing and is presumed to have died on that date.[1]

He has no known grave and is commemorated by the Thiepval Memorial.
