Second Lieutenant Owen Sterling Melhado was an officer of the British Army who died during the First World War.
He was born on 3 June 1892,[1] in Old Harbour, Jamaica, the son of Reginald Henriques and Irene Melhado (née Dolphy). His family had a number of business interests, being engaged in importation and exportation, such as logwood, and the production of dye.[2] Melhado attended Camperdown School before continuing his studies at Bath College and Geneva. He entered Sandhurst in 1910, but left to return to Jamaica,[3] and worked in the business department of the Boston Herald.[4]
After the outbreak of war in 1914, Melhado went to England and enlisted in the army. He was commissioned on 10 February 1915, in the 11th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment.[3] He was attached to his regiment's 5th Battalion in September, and joined it at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli.[5] He suffered gunshot wounds on 19 November. Evacuated to Malta, Melhado succumbed to his wounds on 7 December, at Cottonera Hospital.[1] He was posthumously mentioned in despatches.
He is buried in Marsa Jewish Cemetery.
