Private William Schlitt was an English soldier of the British Army who died during the First World War.
He was born in 1896, in St George in the East, the son of German parents Charles, a baker by trade, and Caroline Schlitt. At the time of the 1911 census, the younger Schlitt was assisting in the business while living with his family at 38 Vallance Road, Whitechapel.
Schlitt died on 6 August 1915, during the Gallipoli Campaign, while serving with the 1st Battalion, The Essex Regiment. He had arrived in theatre in July.[1]
He has no known grave and is commemorated by the Helles Memorial.
